Pittsburgh Regional Youth Heritage Festival

The Pittsburgh Regional Youth Heritage Festival, a series of activities and tours that promote an appreciation for the Pittsburgh region’s history for people of all ages, in conjunction with the Pittsburgh 250 Celebration.  It will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Heinz History Center.

Two bus tours will be held:  an African American history tour and a "Babushkas and Hard Hats" tour.  Please register for those separately.

Also taking place that morning are four workshops designed specifically for the Senator John Heinz History Center’s History Center Affiliates Program (HCAP).  HCAP provides over 120 regional history and genealogical organizations unprecedented access to all of the resources of the History Center and the Smithsonian Institution.  This is an opportunity for participants to meet and Learn from the Heinz History Center staff.

The luncheon keynote address will be delivered by Bill Strickland, President and CEO of the Manchester-Bidwell Center on Pittsburgh’s North Side.  He will inspire the audience with his humble but amazing story about the positive impact the arts has in shaping the lives of young people.

In the afternoon, Festival participants can choose from one of four exciting workshops:  Heritage Tourism, Green History, Effective Advocacy, and the Art of Preservation.  An interactive session will explore a project pioneered by the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh, the “Youth Main Street Advisors.”

A closing address will be delivered by Esther Bush, President and CEO of the Urban League of Pittsburgh.  A Pittsburgh native, Ms. Bush has become nationally recognized as a strong and very vocal advocate for economic and social equality initiatives that benefit African Americans and thereby the whole community.  Ms. Bush is a highly motivated and driven individual who believes that one person can make a difference in our society.

Throughout the entire Festival day, the Heinz History Center will feature the Pittsburgh Regional History Fair.   Visit the tables in the Great Hall with information on local heritage organizations and educational  partners, such as local historical societies, historic preservation groups, environmental organizations, youth-oriented organizations, and local schools, colleges, and universities.

A reception will close out the Festival, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Rich with history and a long tradition of historic preservation, Pittsburgh is a living laboratory for learning about diverse heritage, neighborhood preservation, community development, and green building design.  The Pittsburgh Regional Youth Heritage Festival is a celebration of history for the whole family.
