Where: El Patio Argentine Café, 12303 Twinbrook Parkway, Rockville, MD 20852
About the Speaker: Sam Statland is a native Washingtonian, who has lived and worked in Montgomery County since 1963. A large part of Sam’s life has been spent giving back to the diverse Montgomery County Community which enabled him to become a leading community advocate for Small Business, Health Care, Political, and Social reform.
His advocacy for social reform began at the age of 14 when he lobbied Maryland’s US Senator Mac Mathias for the creation of Medicare under Social Security. Business reform began with the founding of Statland & Katz, Ltd. in 1973. As CEO of a financial services company, Sam disturbed the insurance industry to action by insisting upon the elimination of discriminatory practices such as “red lining,” the practice of refusing to write business and personal lines of insurance based up geographic location, sexuality, race, and language. Other highlights include the advocacy of Small Business Group Health Reform and leading the charge to prevent the privatization of CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Sam has served as the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce’s representative on the Silver Spring and Wheaton Redevelopment Committees, and as a member of the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee.
Political accomplishments include exposing, the hardware and software manufacturing flaws of our current touch screen voting and registration system, passage of Absentee Voting On Demand legislation, and the recent expansion of the Montgomery County Board of Elections from 5 to 7 members. Sam has served on the Board for 6 years, and has been elected by fellow Board Members to serve as President for the next 4 years.
Admission: $20 for Members and $25 for non-members.
