Morning Workshop

Ethics, Emotions, and Values:
Why We Don9t Always Follow the Rules
Friday, October 19, 2007
9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Workshop Presenter: Linda K. Knauss, Ph.D., ABPP

Workshop Description

Date: Friday, October 19, 2007
Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The Union League
140 South Broad Street
Philadelphia, PA 19102

Today9s clinical practice often involves competing interests, values and uncertainty. However, professional training often leaves people unprepared to sort out ethical, clinical and emotional issues. Ideas that seem clear in a textbook, classroom, or workshop become murky in the context of clinical practice.

Studies show that many times people know the ethical course of action, but they still do not take it. Why does this occur? Ethical dilemmas require taking action in situations that are ambiguous. This often creates situations where strong emotions are involved. Emotions and values can interfere with the willingness to use ethical knowledge.

The purpose of this workshop is to help participants identify their personal ethics and values and learn how emotions can interfere with a therapists willingness to act ethically. Case examples will be presented which highlight the emotional discomfort inherent in many decision-making situations. Participants are encouraged to share their own ethical dilemmas.

Workshop Objectives

This workshop is designed to help you:

  1. Identify and understand personal ethics and values;
  2. Recognize how emotions can interfere with the ability to act ethically;
  3. Normalize emotional discomfort in clinical practice;
  4. Integrate emotions and values into the practice of psychotherapy in order to truly practice ethically.

Afternoon Workshop

Good Grief!
Innovative Approaches to Working with Transition and Loss
Friday, October 19, 2007
1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Workshop Presenter: Valarie Molaison, Ph.D., F.T.

Workshop Description

Date: Friday, October 19, 2007
Time: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

The Union League
140 South Broad Street
Philadelphia, PA 19102

Loss and transition are part of the human condition and can impact lives dramatically. While it is customary to define loss as the death of a dear one, loss enters our lives on a more frequent basis such as through divorce, relocation, physical disability, job loss or career changes, or a child leaving home. In the wake of such events, one’s mind, body, spirit, affect, and relationships can be profoundly disrupted.

All clinicians need a working knowledge about the human response to loss. This workshop will provide participants with tools to apply grief concepts to this broad range of concerns. Through experiential exercises and case examples, participants will be invited to broaden their perspectives on loss and learn how to partner with clients facing loss and transition. Topics will include: major types of loss, tasks of grieving, disenfranchised grief, and factors that can lead to the experience of “good grief”.

Workshop Objectives

This workshop is designed to help you:

  1. Classify major types of loss and explore how society tends to respond to them;
  2. Identify the major tasks facing individuals who experience loss;
  3. Define disenfranchised grief and conditions under which it is likely to occur;
  4. Pinpoint key factors that can lead to the experience of “good grief”.
