Summer 2009 CE Meeting - Sunday August 16th

VMABC SUMMER CE – Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Dr. Margie Scherk is a private practitioner who founded the Cats only Veterinary Clinic in Vancouver, BC in 1996.  She graduated from the University of Guelph in 1982 with a DVM from the Ontario Veterinary College.  In 1995 she became board certified in the specialty of Feline Practice by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP).  She has served on the Board of the American association of Feline Practitioners and was 2007 President of the organization.  She has the priviledge of being on the AAFP/AFM Feline Vaccine Recommendations Panel since 1995.  Dr. Scherk founded and co-edits the Feline Internal medicine folder on Veterinary Information Network (VIN), and through many opportunities via the online medium, has grown to love teaching veterinarians, vet students, and veterinary care providers both online and around the world.  She has authored numerous book chapters and scientific papers, and is the North American editor for the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.  One of the things she is most proud of is her pioneering the use of transdermal Fentanyl for the alleviation of pain in companion animals.  She loves to share her love of cats and feline medicine with others.

9:00 to 9:30 am – Registration & Refreshments

9:30 to 11:00 am –  Therapeutic implications in understanding recent findings in feline renal insufficiency: Assumptions regarding therapy of renal diseases have been made from dogs and other species and applied to cats.  Many of these have been shown to not be applicable in cats.  Staging renal insufficiency, a collection of different diseases, allows us to introduce therapies at appropriate stages and encourage our clients to treat their companions.  We will discuss new therapies.

11:00 to 12:00 pm - Update in feline gastrointestinal syndromes:  Tips and tidbits to help the cat with digestive tract disorders: diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, ill-thrift, inappetance, etc.  Pancreatitis, under-recognized or overdiagnosed?  How DO we diagnose it and how should we treat it?

12:00 to 1:15 pm - Lunch Buffet by Pfizer Animal Health

1:15 to 2:45 pm -  Drat, another diabetic cat!  Let's refresh our thinking on the mechanisms of feline glycemic control to understand treatment rationale better.  Which insulin and diet should I use?  What data is there to support these decisions?  We'll look at achieving regulation, ongoing treatment and helping our clients master care for their diabetic kitty.

2:45 to 3:00 pm – Break & Refreshments

3:00 to 4:00 pm – Endocrine Update: There’s More To Cats Than Thyroids And Diabetes:  While diabetes and hyperthyroidism are the most common feline endocrine disorders, recent recognition of hyperprogesteronemia and hyperaldosteronemia has introduced interesting new conditions that we should recognize.  These conditions may well be more common than hyperadrenocorticism, Addison’s, pheochomocytoma and other rare conditions. Acromegaly may be an inapparent, yet potentially treatable underlying problem in a portion of diabetic p atients.  The indications for looking for these conditions will be discussed along with therapy.

4:00 to 5:00 pm - Blood pressure: a critical factor: Over half of our feline patients with renal insufficiency and even more with hyperthyroidism are hypertensive.  Hypertension is called the silent killer. HyPOtension is a common occurrence in our daily clinical lives.  This condition must be recognized and treated for organs to function. Learn how to measure, monitor and treat hyPER and hyPOtension.
