Attracting Nonprofit Investors: Communicating Value and Values (5/28/09)

Course Objectives and Description:

Objectives -

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Incorporate new and costeffective ways to express their nonprofit brand in communications and marketing

2. Identify three or more communications/marketing methods or pieces that might be used by their organizations

3. Rethink and retool their nonprofit communications/marketing pieces to better engage donors and potential donors

4. Consult a variety of helpful resources to be provided.

Outcome Measurement -

1. Define what constitutes a brand; list additional means of branding

2. Suggest materials appropriate to responses to the Learning Process Question

3. Determine why materials were ranked as they were. Discuss mission and donor-centric messaging. Revise/rewrite materials

4. Create list of resources to supplement those provided (to be emailed to attendees with thanks)

Learning Process -

1. Elicit/discuss examples of brands

2. List potential audiences and answer the question "Whatdoes this audience want?"

3. Review, critique and rank sample materials in groups

4. Identify and share resources routinely used


Speaker: Cecile Shopen

With a background in university advancement, 501(c)(3) nonprofit fundraising and four and a half years engaging corporate partners on behalf of a state association, Cecile Shopen has worked with individuals, foundations and corporate contributors from local to national levels. Recognizing the necessary differences in approach, acknowledgement and recognition, she assists nonprofits in enlarging their base of support.

Cecile served as the Director of Allied Relations with a statewide Association, recruiting and stewarding
major business contributors for the Association's Education Foundation and its 1000 booth trade show. As Marketing Director for the US startup of a British NGO, she placed the ED before the Dallas World Affairs Council, on a nationally syndicated radio program with an audience of 1.5 million and in front of a national Newswriters Association. She was Campaign Manager for the Austin Museum of Art, after beginning in fundraising as a Development Associate in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. Other relevant experience includes a business background and an understanding of how organizations must strategically reach out to develop and meet their constituencies. She recently developed comprehensive positioning plans for a dynamic 900 member local professional association.

Cecile has served on several boards including Big Brothers/Big Sisters of San Antonio and as a volunteer
Big Sis. She holds a B.A. in Education from Trinity University and an M.A. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin. She has a lifetime teaching certificate and is currently Vice President of the Austin Astronomical Society.
