Brother Against Brother program

Grades:     4 through 8th grades

Length:    45 minutes

Availability:         Fridays   The program will be offered free one time on a Friday during the school year.
.  Interested teachers should call Megan Schanie to arrange the date and time.  The program will be given away on a first come, first serve basis.

The Frazier Museum employs professional actors who research, write scripts and, ultimately, perform as historic figures. During this performance students will meet William Smith, a composite Union Corporal character who will give students an idea of what it was like for private soldiers newly enlisted in the Union Army. The students will act as the private soldiers, which will include marching drills and creating a sling. A brief interval is then taken for review followed by the Confederate perspective. The end of the program reveals that the two are actually brothers, fighting on different sides during the war. Both soldiers will show students items found in a haversack, as well as discuss the reasons and issues both sides went to war. A reproduction Civil War haversack containing several items will be mailed to the teacher two weeks prior to the program. (Teachers should bring the haversack to the program.)

Program Date and Time:  Friday, September 18th   2 p.m.
