Community Capitalism: Lessons from Kalamazoo and Beyond
Is the sky falling where you are?
Learn how Community Capitalism is keeping Kalamazoo’s sky blue…
After a suffering a long period of economic setbacks in the 1990s - corporate mergers and downsizings hacking thousands of high-paying jobs - Kalamazoo, a community famous for its many "firsts," could have easily fallen like the Roman Empire in 476 A.D. Yet, the community embraced its long-term economic development strategy called Community Capitalism and seized control of its economic future. Learn how they did it and how your community can too!
Harnessing the resources of corporations, non-profit organizations, government, educational institutions and entrepreneurs rather than looking for handouts from state or federal governments, Kalamazoo focuses their effort on five key areas:
How do you get corporations to look your way? How do you identify and tap into unexpected sources of capital, wealth and philanthropic giving? What inspires a community? What advice would you give to communities that are lacking resources, vision or leadership? How do you get community leaders to work together? How do you create a talented workforce of the future?
What you will learn…
§ Building blocks of Community Capitalism.
§ Transferring ownership.
§ Foundation cracks.
§ Hammers and nails.
§ Blueprints for the future.
