This talk is about flow of fluids in open natural fractures. It is a practical summary of what we have learned in the last five decades about fracture flow, matrix-fracture mass transfer and the interaction of fluids at the fracture-matrix interface in petroleum reservoirs. Specifically we will explain that pressure difference between fracture and matrix is not necessarily the main driving force for matrix depletion. In fact, in very low permeability rocks diffusion mass transfer could be the only mechanism for mass transfer. Finally, we will show that gravity and capillary forces are often the major contributors to mass transfer in multi-phase flow situations, and gravity drainage in fractured rocks generally takes place at two scales simultaneously.
Experience indicates that fractures are very difficult to describe and characterize, and the basic premise that a fractured reservoir consists of an ensemble of discrete matrix blocks surrounded by open fractures is rather artificial and too simplistic. Only a small fraction of the reservoir fractures affect reservoir performance. For effective matrix drainage, fractures must be interconnected and connected to appropriate production or injection wells in the drainage area. The drainage of large matrix blocks could be improved if the surrounding fractures become interconnected through the matrix interior, which we will elaborate.
Because naturally fractured reservoirs and their characteristics are diverse, we will present several examples to shed light on relevant issues.
Hossein Kazemi is the Chesebro’ Distinguished Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) and Co-director of Marathon Center of Excellence for Reservoir Studies (MCERS). He received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1961 and 1963. Kazemi is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Distinguished and an Honorary Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). He has published numerous technical papers and has served as Distinguished Author and Speaker for the SPE. He retired from Marathon Oil Company in 2001 after serving as Research Scientist, Senior Technical Consultant, Director of Production Research, Manager of Reservoir Technology, and Executive Technical Fellow at Marathon Petroleum Technology Center in Littleton, Colorado. At CSM he has taught graduate courses in petroleum engineering and supervised graduate research in reservoir modeling, well testing, and improved oil and gas recovery.
