Starts Nov. 13th! FINAL 2008 SESSION! 4 Week: Basics of Belly Dance Thursdays 6:45 - 7:45p.m. Level 1

Have fun learning the basics of belly dance under Melina's friendly guidance.  Learn sinuous and staccato hip movements, spine-awakening body isolations and undulations, shimmies and snake arms. Dance to beautiful belly dance rhythms and melodies from around the world. Melina articulately breaks down belly dance movements and explains which foot to step on, where to put your weight, how to protect your back and body as you explore this intricate and expressive art form. Please bring a bottle of water as you will sweat in class and want to refresh yourself! Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, such as cotton leggings and a jog bra, tank top or choli. It is best if the teacher can see you knees to better correct your dance technique. Take class barefoot, or wear nonskid socks or ballet slippers if you wish. Do not wear shoes with heels, sneakers or street shoes in class. Purchase here for the 8 week session package rate, NO CARRY-OVERS to future sessions please. If you think you will miss a class or two, please choose the drop-in rate of $17 per class, payable at the door in check or cash. More info at 781 209 0950.

You can repeat Melina's level 1 class up to 4 -- or up to 400! -- times before progressing to the next level.  It takes time for technique to get into your body!!

BIOGRAPHY Melina is a modern-day bohemian Renaissance woman: second-generation belly dance artist, innovative performer, choreographer, teacher, writer, circus producer and aerialist with a PhD in medieval French Literature. She recently imported her very own oriental-style circus tent from France and gave birth to CIRQUE PASSION - Born to a folk-rock-circus guitarist father (Phil Marsh) and a hippie-artist belly dance Icon (Rhea of Greece) during the late 60s Berkeley, California cultural revolution, Melina exited the womb into a vibrant life of dance and circus arts that she carries on to this day. Based in Boston, Melina travels to teach and perform internationally, most recently in Singapore, and closer to home, at Kripalu. She has toured with the legendary Flying Wallendas and performs aerially on the lyra and double trapeze at galas and circuses worldwide with 5th-generation circus star husband Sacha Pavlata. Melina co-founded the belly dance company Daughters of Rhea with her sister Piper, the circus arts company Cirque Passion, and the ALS Therapy Development Institute. Her work and life has been featured on Boston's Chronicle TV, 60 Minutes II, National Public Radio, The New Yorker and the documentary So Much, So Fast (her dancing has also been featured on a variety of reality TV shows like Bridezilla and MTV's "MADE"). Melina lights up the stage with her unique manouche (circus gypsy) style. Melina’s uninhibited yet technically precise dance, formed as a child in circus rings and at the shimmering hip of her mother in the shadow of the acropolis, is fun-loving, globally informed, Greco-Turkish, proto-Tribal, modern Bohemian fusion.  She sees belly dance as empowering to women and uses it as a tool to radiate positive vibes throughout the universe.
