“Unprecedented Change – Political and Economic Issues Facing the Travel Industry”

A lively agenda is on tap for our next Chapter Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2009 from 11:00am - 2:00pm at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, WI.  Shane Downey, Manager of Government Relations for the National Business Travel Association (NBTA) will be our main speaker.  The U.S. Government is involved with sweeping initiatives in the travel industry. The Obama administration promises to bring unprecedented change. Shane will address the impact of these changes to our Industry.  Following Shane's presentation, our own panel of Direct and Allied representatives will address how they area responding to the economy and the changes made to their respective travel budgets.  In addition, the WBTA Chapter Pac Challenge is underway plus WBTA Scholarships will be awarded for the Industry Education (CTE, CCTE, GLP) and General Education.

WBTA Chapter PAC Challenge:  Your Wisconsin chapter has been one of the leading fundraisers for the NBTA PAC.  This year, the PAC mission takes on more and more importance as politicians and the press downgrade the importance of business travel that has resulted in the loss of industry jobs.  Now you can make a difference by helping the NBTA PAC keep our voice loud and clear on the hill.  The WBTA Chapter Challenge is underway.  Contribute and help stop the negative rhetoric so that our precious jobs remain.  All donations must be from you personally. Business checks or credit cards are not accepted.  There will be prize drawings at the May meeting.

Speaker:  Shane Downey - Manager, Government Relations for NBTA

“Get Into Politics or Get Out of Business” … Shane Downey discusses the importance of engaging local governments and elected officials. Shane will discuss the latest business travel related developments in Washington, DC and what you can do to positively influence our government.

  • Congress has reacted to recent events in the financial sector and the economy by passing laws and introducing legislation that affects the business travel industry
  • Concerned with the negative image of business meetings and conventions being portrayed NBTA launched an effort to counteract this false message.  NBTA is at the forefront of “Campaign to Protect Meetings and Events” as well as “Meetings Mean Business” coalition.
  • Shane Downey will give you the latest information from Washington D.C. and tell you how you as a member of the business travel industry and as a private citizen can help turn this issue around.
  • Shane will also address the Secure Flight Final Rule which shifts pre-departure watch list matching responsibilities from individual aircraft operators to the TSA and carries out a key recommendation of the 9/11 commission.

Shane Downey comes to NBTA with over 11 years of government affairs experience.  Prior to joining NBTA, Downey was a Senior Associate at a lobbying firm in Washington, D.C, where he worked in the small to medium sized association management department. In this role, Shane worked with the association members to ensure they were engaged in the legislative and political process. Shane also represented the associations before congressional and executive branch officials. In 1996, Shane oversaw the successful reelection of an Ohio Congressman. Downey received his B.A in History from Ohio State University.

The WBTA Direct & Allied Panel  - discussion will focus on the challenges facing the industry and offer cost cutting solutions for both sides of the industry.
