USGBC-STL August Program: ASHRAE Standard 189

USGBC - STL August Program
ASHRAE Standard 189

in partnership with ASHRAE - St. Louis Chapter

This standard is being developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers in conjunction with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This is the first such green building standard in the United States, and is being developed to establish minimum green building requirements in building code format for possible adoption by various code enforcement agencies.

“Standard 189.1 is essential for the further promotion of high-performance green buildings in the United States and for reaching net-zero-energy goals,” says Kent Peterson, current chair of the committee, and ASHRAE President for 2007-2008. “The committee is confident that this standard, with its increased energy savings over Standard 90.1, will help building owners and operators as well as local jurisdictions meet their sustainability targets.”

The third public review of this proposed standard was issued in May of 2009, and the committee hopes to have the Standard ready to issue early in 2010.
