According to Big Brothers/Big  Sisters, the oldest and largest youth mentoring program in the country, there are more than 12,000 African-American boys nationwide and 800 boys in Greater Philadelphia alone who have  requested, yet cannot find, mentors.  As Founder of the Urban Philly Professional Network (UPPN), I contacted BBBS of SE Pennsylvania and discovered only 15% of their male volunteers are African-American and, subsequently, black boys are suffering!

Too many young men in Philadelphia do not have positive role models to look up to.  There is a strong need in OUR community to provide positive images to these young men so they can aspire to more.

This is a call to action gentlemen...

BBBS has agreed to develop a program with the UrbanPhilly Professional Network.  This is a program to help close the mentoring gap and positively impact our community through involvement.  To help African-American men (us) get over the hurdle of finding time and money to volunteer, BBBS has agreed to organize monthly activities for us and any male volunteers who volunteer within our program(sports, entertainment, arts, culture, etc).  This means we no longer have to figure out activities or spend resources trying to identify ways to help and things to do.  All that is required is to be a man... help expose these young men to a world they will not otherwise  experience... help show them there are responsible black men in our community with good jobs and great families.

In order to make this happen, we need to recruit 100 mentors in the next 100 days (by November 8th, 2008.)  Can you imagine 100 black men and black boys attending their  first-ever NBA or NFL game and how they will remember the experience for the rest of their lives?

If ever there were a need for us to step up... the time is now.
