It is with great enthusiasm that we invite you to attend TiE Minnesota's June Event entitled, "Lessons Learned Along the Journey" - An Evening with Kal Patel. This event offers attendees a unique opportunity to engage in discussion with one of America's premiere and celebrated strategy thinkers and corporate officers. Kal is passionate about coaching teams of entrepreneurs inside large corporations, helping accelerate new business creation by connecting them to other corporations, venture capitalists and emerging technologies. Kal Patel
Kal Patel, Executive Vice President, Strategy and International, is helping Best Buy transform into a radically different kind of retailer – one that continually innovates in order to meet and exceed the expectations of its customers. His fresh insights and unique leadership skills inspire North America’s leading consumer electronics retailer to challenge the status quo and to seek opportunities beyond its traditional boundaries. As executive vice president, strategy and international for Best Buy Co., Inc., Patel is instrumental in embedding a culture of innovation across the organization. He is helping the Fortune 100 company form its roadmap to the future by helping the them recognize the potential value of each employee in shaping Best Buy’s future. His work helps the company challenge the orthodoxies of its existing business in many ways to bring about change. In his current role, he also will play a critical role in leading and driving new growth opportunities in new markets, including a retail presence in China.

Patel joined Best Buy in 2003 as vice president of strategy. Prior to Best Buy, Kal was the director of Strategos where he helped large multinational clients build sustainable capability to revitalize their core business and to create rule-breaking growth ventures. He has also held senior positions at Courtaulds plc, Andersen Consulting and KPMG Consulting based in Europe. At KPMG, he co-founded the "Business Transformation" practice where he led major strategic change initiatives for clients. His twelve years of consulting experience cuts across financial services, high-tech, healthcare and telecommunications.

Patel has a master’s degree in business administration from the London Business School. He also has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Leeds University in the United Kingdom.

What does TiE stand for?

TiE stands for "The Indus Entrepreneurs", reflecting the South Asian background of the individuals who chartered the organization in 1992. Over time, TiE has come to represent "Talent, ideas and Enterprise" or 'The Innovative Ecosystems' through its activities and influences.

How and when was TiE started?

The concept of TiE was born at the end of 1992 at a lunch meeting of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and professionals. The idea originated with the objective of sharing and giving back to society. Initially this small group of individuals launched monthly activities, which, in turn, attracted more members. By 1994, TiE had become a formal organization with a larger group of members and participants. TiE remains a unique volunteer driven organization, with the single-minded focus on its objective.

What is the mission and objective of TiE?

TiE's mission is to foster and advance entrepreneurship across the globe. Its principle objective is to provide a platform on which people with entrepreneurial spirit and those interested in economic value creation can come together to share ideas. TiE endeavors to cultivate and nurture the ecosystems of entrepreneurship and free-market economics everywhere, as it sees this to be the single most powerful instrument of prosperity.

Does TiE have any religious or political objectives?

No! TiE does not engage in political or religious activities or any matters that may create divisiveness among people.
