Program Description:
Psychotropic prescriptions to children have escalated rapidly over the last decade. While the Food and Drug Administration has approved several new pediatric indications in that time period, concern is rising that medications are being prescribed excessively and unwisely. Widespread use of very expensive new medications is also proving burdensome to the Indiana Medicaid system.

This timely conference will focus on safe and empirically validated treatment of major child psychiatric illnesses, including bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Indiana-specific data on psychotropic use in the Medicaid population will be compared to regional and national data. Appropriate treatment protocols emphasizing reasonable medication options and non-psychotropic treatment alternatives will be reviewed. This symposium will be especially appropriate for primary care providers, general and child/adolescent psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and behavioral health providers caring for Indiana’s youngest and most vulnerable population.

Educational Objectives:
At conclusion of course, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the most common psychiatric problems of children;
  • Select evidence based treatments for psychopathology in children;
  • Identify potential adverse effects of common treatments for childhood psychopathology;
  • Describe the epidemiology and financial costs associated with stimulant, atypical antipsychotics, and anti-depressants use in children enrolled in Indiana Medicaid programs;
  • Identify the core elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and apply CBT strategies to mood disorders in children;
  • Summarize the wrap around service models in the community.
