Sisters Organizing to Survive Conference

This is a regional Women's Conference on HIV/AIDS.

In 2008 the Florida Department of Health published a report called Organizing to Survive highlighting the HIV/AIDS disparities among women.   In June 2008, as a response, a statewide conference was held called Sistas Organizing to Survive (SOS) with very specific goals in mind. The first was to educate, empower, excite and ignite Black women to get involved in HIV efforts ranging from education, prevention, testing and care.  Women attending the conference were challenged to integrate HIV into their everyday life where they live, work, play and worship.  The second goal was to get all women to TAKE THE PLEDGE.  The pledge involves a commitment to educate, empower and mobilize women to take control of their sexual health, get tested and encourage other women, particularly Black women, to know their HIV status.  The final measure of success is the goal to test 100,000 Black women each year by 2010.  Since the success of this conference, several smaller SOS conferences have been held throughout the state and a mobilization movement has begun.

Southwest Florida has “caught the vision” and a regional SOS conference will be held at Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 9:00am to 5:00pm.  Our hope is that women in Southwest Florida will leave this conference empowered to become involved in this movement and make a difference in their own communities.  Childcare will be available.  Lunch will be provided.
