HUAA Region II Presents: Sips & Sounds

Howard University Alumni Association Region II is honored to present 'Sips & Sounds’ inaugural fundraiser as a premier and official event of the Howard University 2009 homecoming festivities. This event will serve as the largest alumni association homecoming fundraising event in the history of the University attracting thriving, accomplished and prominent alumni and endeared friends of the Howard University family. This year, we honor Howard University’s School of Fine Arts and the contributions of illustrious alumna, Ms. Taraji P. Henson.

Ms. Taraji P. Henson, actress, singer, and alumna started her acting career shortly after graduating from Howard University guest-staring on several television shows including the WB’s Smart Guy, Fox Television’s House, and CBS’ CSI. She has been a cast member on a host of television shows which include ABC’s Boston Legal and Lifetime’s The Division. She made her singing debut in Hustle & Flow providing the vocals for the track ‘It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp’ which won an Academy Award for the Best Original Song in 2006. Since her early career, Ms. Henson has starred in a plethora of blockbuster movies including Hustle & Flow, Something New, Smokin’ Aces, Talk to Me, Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys and Not Easily Broken too name a few. Ms. Henson has become one of Hollywood’s most sought after actresses, garnering critical acclaim for her repertoire of performances. She was recently nominated for the 2009 Screen Actors Guild and 2009 Oscar awards as Best Supporting Actress for her stellar performance as Queenie in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ starring opposite Brad Pitt. Taraji won the Austin Film Critics 2008 Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’. She also won the 2009 BET award for Best Actress. Howard University Alumni Association Region II is extremely elated to honor Ms. Henson who continues to publicly acknowledge Howard University for providing her with the intellectual capacity and the artistic prowess which has attributed to her growing success. a lavish, two level lounge featuring sleek Mediterranean decor, ambient lighting, state of the art technology and rhythmic sounds.  Layla Lounge is located at 501 Morse Street, N.E. in the heart of the Capital City Market area of the District of Columbia. This red carpet affair will take place on Friday, October 23, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at one of the District of Columbia’s hidden treasures - Layla Lounge – Sips & Sounds combines a wine tasting with food pairings and live jazz. The cocktail style event provides a premier setting, creative culinary and musical talents of alumni partners and a unique selection of silent auction items.  Moreover, by incorporating and sharing the diverse talents of alumni, this HUAA fundraising event will also recognize prominent and emerging alumni for their success and commitment to give back to the Howard University community. Come enjoy an evening filled with the eclectic sounds of Eric Roberson, and the Howard University Jazz Ensemble Reunion.
