Project WILD Day at the Fair

Potential WILD Volunteers:

This is the third year to host Project WILD Day at the Fair. The help that you have previously offered has been tremendous!  We are excited and looking forward to seeing new and former volunteers at the Fair again.  The Indiana State Fair will run from August 7 to August 23 this year.  Project WILD Day at the Fair is August 15. Unlike previous years, there will be two shifts at the fishing pond, one in the morning from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and one in the evening from 3:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

There are five available volunteer stations this year. If you have any questions about the sessions, please contact Mary Hayes at 317-549-0348 or at

Fishing Instructors

This group of volunteers will be working directly with the program participants (kids and family) at the fishing pond.  They be working individually with 2 or 3 kids and their parents.  They will assist the youth during their fishing time and help them with fishing skills (casting, baiting hooks), catching the fish and returning it back to the pond.  There are 20 spots available per shift.

This group of volunteers will be needed to keep fishing instructors supplied with hooks, bobbers, sinkers, bait, etc.  They will also help in the daily set-up of fishing area and equipment. There are 2 spots available per shift.

Participant registration

This group of volunteers will help in registering the youth for the event.  They will make sure that everyone is signed up and ready to fish.  There are 2 spots available per shift.

Educators (crafts)

This group of volunteers will help the children with a hands-on educational activity (craft activity).  We will supply the activities. This role is ideal for those who don’t want to get fishy but want to help. There are 4 spots available per shift.

Educators (Flying WILD Activities)

This group of volunteers will staff two activity tables where kids can try activities from the Flying WILD guide - trying out binculars and learning about different bird beaks and their adaptations. This session runs from 1:30 - 4:30. We will supply the activities. There are 4 spots available for this activity.

There is no experience needed to do any of the jobs.  We offer optional training in July for all volunteers who plan to attend the fair.  Although this is not mandatory, it is highly recommended for the new volunteers in 2009.  It will also serve as days for early ticket pick up.  All volunteers receive a free ticket to get into the fair on the days they volunteer, and the ticket is good for the entire day.  All volunteers will also be provided with a t-shirt to wear during their shift.
