Collaboration across industries is often the unifying theme of project management. It is definitely the unifying theme of the two presentations for the January 22 Los Padres PMI chapter meeting. Jim Peters, Mike Weber, and Rick Allen come from the Information Technology, Biomedical Engineering/Medical Devices, and Construction worlds respectively to address issues that are common to many project management professionals.

Part 1 - 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM - Risk Assessment, a core skill for Project Managers
by Jim Peters, PMP and Mike Weber, PMP
A key aspect of risk assessment during project planning is identifying the risks and deciding if and how to respond. This presentation will provide a hands on technique that will facilitate effective identification of both risks and mitigation strategies. Jim has utilized and taught this technique as part of project management seminars for the last 8 years. The presentation will include a hands on exercise that is often the highest rated technique by participants of Jim’s project management seminars. If you have ever wanted a technique that can help stifle undermining of your projects by naysayers or if you simply desire to be more effective in the risk management process, the tools presented will fit well in your PM tool chest.

Part 2 - 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM - Managing projects without Gantt Charts
by Richard Allen and Jim Peters, PMP
Have you ever seen well meaning project managers turn 1 day chunks of work into week long series of events or wondered how to handle the R&D projects where the outcomes of one phase drive the subsequent phases? Too often, project management is abandoned when situations do not readily fit into the standard techniques taught by PM practitioners. Jim & Rick will identify several typical situations encountered in R&D and in iterative methods that can help keep in control what is often approached as uncontrollable. Rick will provide his insights from engineering work in the medical device industry on identifying and solving these project management conundrums. Jim will provide his experience with iterative approaches in software development and implementing project management methods utilizing software tools integrating software tools to help solve these problems. Both have worked with clients with outside-the-box requirements.
