School and Government Relations:  What is happening currently in education in the Oregon and Washington legislatures?  How can I get involved to affect change?


Representative Deb Wallace, Washington State


Rep. Deb Wallace has been a Vancouver resident for the past 20 years.  She currently serves on these legislative committees: Higher Education, Chair, Transportation, Appropriations Sub-committee on Education, and the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee.  She is also currently involved with: Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership Board of Directors, ESD 112 Citizens Advisory Committee, Regional Transportation Committee, 211-info Board of Directors, and Clark County Skills Center Advisory Committee.


Betsy Ramsey, Past President of the Oregon Branch of IDA


Betsy is a research associate in the Oregon Cancer Institute at OHSU.  She joined IDA shortly after her son was diagnosed with dyslexia in 1990.  She has been chair of the State Advisory Council for Special Education and currently serves on the board of Oregon Parent Training and Information and represents the Oregon Branch of IDA on the Oregon Literacy Leadership State Steering Committee. She is a volunteer for the IEP Partner Project of ORPTI and Portland Public Schools and co-author with Lee Sherman of The Reading Glitch-How the Culture Wars Have Hijacked Reading Instruction and What we can Do About It.
