Course Description

The incidence of obesity in the United States has grown to epidemic proportions.

More than one third of U.S. adults are obese; and in the state of Michigan 64% of adults are either overweight or obese. The estimated annual cost of obesity-related health care in the U.S. totals $117 billion.

This increase in the incidence of obesity is contributing to an increase in the incidence of co-morbidities and adding a significant burden to medical resources.

Obesity has countless implications on health, and the literature shows that the majority of primary care providers feel ill equipped at managing their obese patients.  While more than one third of the population suffers from obesity, the current medical school curriculum is deficient in regard to obesity management and treatment.

This disparity between lack of education and training and an increasing number of obese patients is worrisome. This worry is compounded by the fact that the social stigma surrounding obesity makes discussing it with patients an uncomfortable situation.

This event will help to advance the clinician’s knowledge of how to assess and manage obesity and the associated co-morbid conditions in the primary care setting.

Featured Speakers

A panel of physicians who devote their practice to managing patients with obesity and obesity-related co-morbidities will share their knowledge about caring for this growing population.
