The Enterprising Places Network
Make Your Mark and ONE North East are pleased to invite you to the launch of the Enterprising Places Network in the North East of England.
The Network provides a direct link to the national Enterprise Place Network launched by Make Your Mark in 2008 and to similar networks elsewhere in United Kingdom.
The Enterprising Place Network is a sounding board for policy makers and practitioners and an open forum to share learning and successful practice. It provides a Place-led perspective to regional and national enterprise strategies.
Beyond the City
This is the first of a number of Workshops to be promoted by the Network in the North East of England in the next six months.
The Region needs a fine-grained picture of the economic contribution of its rural areas – some of which are performing strongly, some of which are performing less strongly and others where deep-seated problems remain.
Manufacturing is the largest single rural employer in the North East. Three rural districts display significantly higher rates of part time working: in excess of 25% of those employed in Teesdale, Sedgefield, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tynedale work part time. Yet levels of benefit claims in the former coalfield areas are comparable with parts of the inner city, whilst more remote areas in County Durham experienced the highest increase in Job Seekers Allowance claims during 2008.
Two questions addressed by this workshop are:
9.15am Tea and coffee on arrival
9.30am Welcome and Introduction to the Enterprise Place Network
Tim Pain, Head of Business, Enterprise and Skills, ONE North East
Pamela Hargreaves, Director of Partnerships, Make Your Mark
9.45am Beyond The City: Introduction
9.50am The evidence base: The economy Beyond the City
Frances Rowe, ONE North East :
10.35am Refreshment Break
10.50am The practice: case studies
WIN’s Rural Women Entrepreneurs 2007 and 2008
11.50am Small discussion groups
12.15pm Feedback and next steps
12.30pm Buffet lunch and networking
The network is being hosted by reaction and this event will be chaired by Graham Taylor OBE, former Chief Executive of Northumberland National Park Authority and Chair of Reaction’s Advisory Board.
