SAP Open Tennis Tournament

Ticket price includes the bus ride there and back, your ticket to the tournament, and a $1 tip for the bus driver.

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, on Saturday 2/14/09 than to join the MTA on its annual trek to the semi-finals of the men’s open SAP tournament held at the San Jose HP Pavilion? This MTA sponsored event never fails to provide a fun-filled evening of good entertainment, not to mention the bountiful gourmet delights shared amongst MTA foodies. Watching the top pros play the game is a great way (and rather humbling experience) to usher in the new tennis season.

The 2009 featured players include some of the biggest names competing for one of the biggest prizes on the West Coast. This year’s participants include James Blake, Mardy Fish, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, upcoming rising star Juan Martin Del Porto, and doubles specialists, the Bryan Brothers.

The MTA has reserved a block of 47 seats, in the same location as previous years (upper baseline), to view this tournament and take in the show. The tickets are priced at a discount from box office prices since we are purchasing them as a group.

By reserving through us, it is all taken care of for you. The bus is ready and will effortlessly take us to and from. Although the cost of the bus has increased by $1.50 from last year to $18 round trip, it saves you the hassle of finding and paying for a parking space, dealing with Nimitz freeway traffic, plus provides the opportunity to eat and drink all the way down and back! Besides, the amazing array of food that is passed around on this bus is alone worth the cost of the ticket. You are welcome to eat or drink whatever you want on the bus, and bringing a dish to share is strongly encouraged. If you do not wish to participate in this bus-luck, then of course you can buy dinner at the concessions in the arena.

We will load the bus at the same place as previous years at the upper parking lot of the Mormon Temple, on Monterey Blvd, just off of Lincoln Ave. Please note that this is not the main temple parking lot, but rather it is located across the street. Also we strongly encourage you to park on the street and avoid the possibility of having the temple parking lot chained up when we return. There is ample street parking, but please follow the restrictions noted on the street signs. We will board at 5:30 and leave at 5:45 pronto. Please do not be late because the bus is chartered for a specific number of hours and we cannot wait.

These tickets are anticipated to sell out as they did last year. Many people were disappointed that they were not able to go because they failed to sign up in time. This year, as for the last two years, we are also opening this event up to the Chabot Canyon Racquet Club members. Through this event, we have enjoyed the opportunity to become better acquainted with our local fellow tennis players in sharing this experience.

This year, everything will be reserved and paid for through Eventbrite ( If you are unable to register on EventBrite, please send a check for the full amount (see below) to Donna Haiman (, or check the roster for her phone number).

The cost of the tournament ticket is $38 ($43 without group discount), $18.00 for the bus, and $1 for a tip for the bus driver (assuming that he gets us down there and back), for a total of $57. This amount can be paid by credit card or PayPal through Eventbrite. Please get your reservations in soon, since our payment to SAP to hold our seats is due 1/5/09.
