Dr. Joan T. Merrill, MD, is the Medical Director of the Lupus Foundation of America. She is currently Head of the Clinical Pharmacology Research Program at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), OMRF Professor of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University in New York City.  Dr. Merrill´s research focus is the study of genetics and pathophysiology relevant to atherosclerosis risk in lupus and antiphospholipid syndrome.


Dr. John Esdaile, MD, MPH, FRCPC, is the Scientific Director, Arthritis Research Centre of Canada, Professor of Rheumatology, Department of Medicine, University of British Columbia. Dr. Esdaile has authored more than 180 publications in refereed journals, as well as more than two dozen books and book chapters. His publication of the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in systemic lupus erythematosus is considered a landmark paper that has altered the treatment of this disease for many patients.


Dr. Kenneth Kalunian, MD is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He also serves as the Associate Director, University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Center for Innovative Therapy; Director, UCSD Osteoarthritis Center as well as the UCSD Director, Lupus Clinical Trials Consortium. Dr. Kalunian will speak on Lupus Nephritis.


Dr. Dan Bilsker, RPsych is a psychologist who consults to a mental health services research group (CARMHA) at Simon Fraser University and works in an emergency psychiatric unit at Vancouver General Hospital. His academic appointments are Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University and Clinical Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. Over the last 10 years, he has led a project to enhance mental health care in Canada by disseminating self-management workbooks for mental health problems and training family physicians to provide brief behavioural interventions.


Jude Clarke is a professional artist and art educator. Jude’s book “The Language of Water” is a graceful, poignant portrayal reflecting her personal growth during her long struggle with Lupus.
