Title: Managing Risk with a Shrinking Budget

Description: In the current economic environment many organizations are making budget cuts and information security is no exception to this trend. In this presentation we will explore activities where value to the business is achieved with little to none outside expenditure required of the business. This presentation will cover "legacy" security program practices and identify how to increase security and improve upon compliance and risk management with little outsourcing of the required tasks.

Eric Breece | Principal Security Architect | State of Minnesota | Minneapolis, MN

Eric Breece is the principal security architect responsible for building the first enterprise-wide information security program for the Executive branch.  He brings 14 years of Information Technology and Information Security experience that ranges from application development to infrastructure implementation.  He has worked for companies like GMAC, Guidant, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, and Larson Software.  While he originally hails from south of the Mason-Dixon Line in Virginia, he spent his college years at the University of Minnesota for theater arts (don't ask how he got into IT, that's another hour long presentation).

Title: Developing Policies & Standards: A Value Proposition

Description: What value proposition is there in security policies and standards when budgets are being pinched?  What value do security policies and standards truly provide with an ever increasing, never ending threat landscape?  We will take a look at how a little policy development, strategic planning, and understanding business risk tolerance can go a long way to improve your organizations security posture, even in today's economic downturn.  With a handful of tactics, organizations can build an effective program that can manifest success in some vary subtle ways.  Building a picture that describes the value of information security, which can be understood from senior leadership to the administrative assistant, is critical to making the difference between "shelf-ware" policies and giving a security program a chance of being successful.  However, even a fully functional program has to mind the gaps and be weary of rabbit wholes.
