Introduction to Lean Design

Introduction to Lean Design is a two day seminar which is focused on equipping project teams in the planning and design phase with tools to increase common understanding and productivity in Pre-Construction.  This seminar emphasizes the basics of Lean Construction through practical, hands-on workshops on the theories, tools, and instruments available to maximize efficiency during design phase implementation. Learn how to leverage the three value opportunities of Lean Design & Construction; impeccable coordination, project production system design, and total collaboration!

 Session Topics:

· BIM and Value Stream Mapping

· Lean Project Planning

· Relational Contracting

· Target Value Design

Our staff of instructors and coaches are people working with these technologies and strategies on a daily basis on major projects with leading firms in the Design & Construction Industry.

Interactive Technology & Planning Workshops:

· Last PlannerTM Project Scheduling Exercise!

· 20 Station BIM Integrated Team “Big Room”!

· Laser Scanning Demonstration!

· Technology “Corners” for all Instruments and Software!

We have pulled out all the stops on this two day seminar.  These two days are loaded with simulations to try your hand at Reverse Phase Planning, working in a collaborative BIM Big Room, and small group experiences with the top of the line software and instruments.

Introduction to Lean Design was developed as a response to an increasing number of inquiries for more focus on applying Lean Construction in project design phase. Whether you are new to the concepts of Lean Construction, or a seasoned practitioner, this seminar will emphasize integrated design strategies, reverse phase planning, relational contracting and tools with seminars by some of the nations top instructors and hands on simulations in order to provide the finest theoretical and experiential learning.

This seminar is designed for the individual, project teams, architects and construction managers alike.  No matter who you are if you are involved in the design phase of a building this exciting conference will give you the opportunity to invest your knowledge in the leading edge of integrated design, working with the newest products, with the support of many knowledgeable instructors.

Glenn Ballard is co-founder and research director of the Lean Construction Institute (LCI). Dr. Ballard brings 25 years of construction industry expertise to his role and is a recognized expert in the area of project performance improvement.

He has worked as a manager, trainer and consultant with a myriad of organizations ranging from construction and engineering firms to public utilities to international oil and gas manufacturers.

An accomplished educator, author and public speaker, Dr. Ballard is currently a member of the construction engineering and management program faculty at UC Berkeley and Stanford. His teaching focuses on improving, as opposed to controlling, project performance.  His principle research interest is adapting lean production theory from manufacturing to construction management practice.  Toward that end, he has developed a model for lean delivery of capital facility projects, the Lean Project Delivery System.  Dr. Ballard is also a founding member of the International group of Lean Construction, which is dedicated to the development and application of production control concepts and techniques in the construction industry.  He is frequently asked to share his research and experience with audiences at conferences and private organizations around the world.

Reccomended Hotel:  The Watertown Inn is compleatly full for this event.  We have been able to negotiate a corporate rate at the SilverCloud Inn nearby.  If you are intersted in reserving a room here please e-mail me and I will send you our group reservation instructions.

Each hotel will be providing a shuttle between their lobby and the conference.  Please sign up with the front desk for which shuttle you would like to be on.  Please understand that each of these hotels have small vans they are using as shuttles and we suggest that you would plan accordingly to be on time for registration between 7:30 and 8:30.  We will be providing transportation to the Monday night reception and back to the hotel, to try and avoid the number of cars guests need to rent.

Airport transportation:  For any hotel to the University District we reccomend SA Towncar Service, with cars for up to 4 guests.  Price from SeaTac Airport is a $40 flat fee, which is more cost effective then popular chain shuttle van lines or taxi's from the airport for more then one person.  Call ahead for reservations (206)459-7903.

We will also be coordinating a shuttle on Monday at the event to provide transportation back to the airport at 5:00 on Tuesday.
