IBEX O'Pen Bic Regatta

IBEX O'Pen Bic Regatta

Thursday, October 15
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Shake-A-Leg Miami welcomes you to try your hand at racing in one of the Miami Yacht Club's O'Pen Bic sailboats.

The first ever IBEX O'Pen Bic Regatta will begin at 10:00 a.m., but competitors and spectators are welcome to arrive as early as 8:30 a.m.

O'Pen Bic Competitors will be expected to follow the rules already established at O'Pen events such as the "Un-Regatta Mid Winters."

Here's the short version: The results are not nearly as important as everyone having a good time sailing. Don’t expect conventional round-the-buoys racing or normal 1-2-3 prizes. Capsizes and freestyle and fun will be required. (See additional O'Pen Bic Regatta Rules at the bottom of this page.)

Not familiar with O'Pen Bic racing? Take a look at the YouTube video of last year's "un-regatta" for area kids. If the kids can do it, so can you.

You may register to join the regatta and race in one of the O'Pen Bics, or you can choose to spend your day onboard one of SALM's spectator powerboats, sailing a Freedom Independence 20-ft sailboat, or paddling a kayak. If you don't want to be on the water at all, that's fine, too. Come by to visit the facility and cheer on the racers.

  • O'Pen Bic Regatta Competitor: $50.00 donation.
  • Non-Competitor access to the Shake-A-Leg fleet on Regatta Day: Donation requested.
  • Lunch only: Donation requested.

Lunch will be served mid-day for all registered participants and spectators. (There are also several restaurants nearby for those who want lunch on their own or a post-regatta meal.)

Prizes will be awarded during closing ceremony at 3:30 p.m.

O'Pen Bic Regatta Rules

  • Starboard tack has right away over port tack.
  • When capsizes or freestyle moves are required, you must make sure you are clear of all other sailors when you make the maneuver, and don’t interfere with or immediately obstruct other sailors.
  • Competitors shall remain on or near their vessels at all times.
  • Minor contact of the marks of the course is permitted. Contact that causes any damage, or the location of the mark to change or drag, is not permitted.
  • Hitting the Race Committee boat or start boat is prohibited.
  • Pumping: Pumping is not allowed except when conditions exist for planning or surfing, and only then to promote that activity.
  • The Race Committee will fly a flag (type to be described in Sailing Instructions) when such conditions exist.
  • This event will be decided on the water and not in the protest room. It is the responsibility of every competitor to sail in a manner that is fair and with due respect of their fellow competitor, so that the results are a valid reflection of true sailing ability.
  • Absolutely no intentional contact is permitted. Protests will only be accepted in unusual or extreme circumstances.
  • It is the intention of the Organizing Authority that further enforcement of the rules will not be needed.
  • However, if necessary or in doubt, the standard ISAF Racing Rules of sailing shall apply for anything not outlined above. The ISAF Rules are readily available on www.sailing.org.

Regatta Proceeds Go To Shake-A-Leg-Miami!

This is an excellent opportunity to unwind post-IBEX, and to make a donation to SALM in thanks for all they do for our industry. This organization helps children and adults with physical, developmental and economic challenges; liberating them from the realm of imagination into the realm of experience. The group has successfully created an inspirational haven, where people of all backgrounds and abilities find common ground.

Shake-A-Leg Miami is South Florida’s "Gateway to Biscayne Bay." In addition, SALM is designing a track program to teach an array of skills for new workers--including veterans--who want to pursue marine-industry careers such as marine mechanics, fiberglass technicians, marine carpenters, yacht painters and more. SALM’s continued partnership with the City of Miami, plus more than 100 community organizations, both public and private, is the ultimate confirmation of the power of unity and collaboration.
