Windsurfing/Kiteboarding Hood River, OR - Mars Hill Outdoors

Windsurfing/Kiteboarding Hood River, OR June 8-10 The following provides some useful details for the Windsurf/Kiteboarding trip, June 8-10.  Please read through it and let me know if you have any questions.  See you then! We will be taking lessons from Big Winds in Hood River, OR.  They will be teaching in a safe area called the Hook that is its own little lake.  This is a great place to learn!!  All lessons include gear, wetsuit and 1.5 hrs with instructor and 1.5 on your own to practice what you learned.   Cost on lessons will be $65 with a possible 15% on top depending on if we have 10 people or more.  If you want the basic 3 lessons (which consists of 3-1.5 hrs with instructor and 3-1.5 on your own with practice) this will get you going quick—cost $170!!!

For Kiteboard lessons there is more danger here so it is more expensive.  Costs are as follows:

Kite Control School 1/2 hour lesson, plus 1 hour practice solo session with kite $50 per student.  Maximum two students per instructor Kite Control School is the first lesson in the Big Winds Kite School sequence, and is designed for students with little or no previous experience. Kite Control School takes place at the Sandbar with a 2-line trainer kite. This lesson is vital to learning how to kiteboard. Students can, however, skip directly to Ground School if they can demonstrate being able to control a kite.

Topics covered in this session include:

  • Kite theory
  • Launching and landing the 2-line trainer kite
  • Kite flying basics

Big Winds9 kite instructors recommend that students practice kite flying for an hour after Control School in order to hone their kite skills before advancing to the next level.
Ground School1 1/2 hour lesson $85 per studentMaximum two students per instructor.  The Ground School is focused on teaching students everything they need to know about kiteboarding before they get in the water. Students must be able to control a trainer kite before enrolling in Big Winds Ground School.

Topics covered in this session include:

  • Rigging and tuning the 5-line kite and control system
  • Launching and landing the kite
  • Knowing and operating the 5-line safety systems
  • Water re-launching of the kite
  • Powering and de-powering the kite
  • Self-rescue After completing Ground School, you9re ready to move into the water!Water Lessons,  2 hour private lesson, $220,  3 hour private lesson, $300

All Big Winds Kite School water-based lessons are private, jet-ski assisted, and start upwind of Wells Island. This provides an optimal learning environment that maximizes individual attention. Each lesson focuses on developing the student9s skills, starting from wherever they are in the sport and taking them as far as possible.

The instructors are always right beside their students in the water, making the lesson as safe and productive as possible. We use jet skis so our students can escape the congestion of the sandbar and seek an open section of water for the lesson. This results in a lesson free of potential hazards and distractions, with more time in the water for the student.

 Equip 2 Rip Camp
2 days, 7 hours of instruction, $499 Equip 2 Rip is designed for students with no kite experience. The first day starts with Kite Control School for kite orientation, and quickly moves into Ground School in the afternoon.

The second day consists of two full 2-hour private sessions, getting comfortable with the kite in shallow water far upwind of any congestion, nailing your body drags and water starts. Now you are ready for your first rides on the board!

This camp is a great way to jump-start your learning curve, and is the equivalent of taking Kite Control School, Ground School, and four full hours of one-on-one instruction, packaged together for a $75 savings! If you know this sport is for you, but you haven9t flown a kite yet, Equip 2 Rip is for you!

Camping and Driving Directions:

Camping Location:  Hood River, OR is east of Portland, OR.  Tucker Park is in Hood River.  Call me on my cell (206) 718-1947 to get our exact spot!!

Driving Directions:  From I-5 south (156.7miles)  Merge onto I-205 S via Exit 7 toward WA 14 /Salem/ I-84 (Crossing into Oregon.) Merge onto I-84 via Exit 22 towards The Dalles.  Take US-30 Exit Hood River City Center.  From I-84 Eastbound, take Exit 62 into Hood River.
Turn Right at end of exit ramp onto State Rt. 30/35 towards downtown HR and go ~1.2 mi.
Turn Right onto 13th St. (There is a signal there and a diner on the corner) and go up hill. State maps also show this road as Hwy. 281. It also becomes Tucker Road. If you stay on Tucker Road, it will take you to the park, even though it turns a lot!
After ~1.5 mi. you will leave town. Tucker road does a series of 90-degree curves (R, L, R) and after the third curve and 4.3 miles from leaving the freeway, you will approach an intersection.
IMPORTANT! Tucker Road again curves left at this intersection, so turn left. I believe oncoming traffic has to stop, but you might not...can’t it’s a weird left turn; not exactly a 4-way stop.
Continue on this road; go down hill and cross Hood River on a small bridge.
About ½ mile after the bridge, (I think) you will see a sign indicating Tucker Park on the right hand side of the road. The road is small and easy to miss. If you miss it, you will continue up the hill on Dee Highway.
