Hearts of Courage(premiere showing of the BYU-TV documentary)

The BYU Management Society (DFW Chapter) invites you to this special opportunity to meet author and Advisory Board member John M. Tippets and enjoy the premiere showing of a BYU-TV documentary about his new book, Hearts of Courage.  Also meet Rob Sibley, the BYU Broadcasting LDS Lives producer.

The book is about John's father's experiences as a survivor of an Alaska airplane crash in 1943.  The plane, with six onboard, went missing in remote Southeast Alaska with the pilot's only radio message of "one engine has conked out, expect trouble."  The winter weather was extreme, searchers found no signs of the Lockheed-Electra aircraft, and all were presumed lost.  One of those passengers was Joseph Tippets, age 29, of Anchorage, Alaska, an employee of the Civil Aeronautics Administration, and the first branch president of the small Latter-day Saint Anchorage congregation.

Joseph's wife, Alta, with her two-year-old son in Anchorage did not give up hope and was a source of strength and encouragement to others.  On February 3, the crew of a small Coast Guard vessel on a routine patrol in Boca de Quadra was stunned to discover two starved and freezing survivors of the missing plane.  One of those was Joseph Tippets.

The author, John M. Tippets, is a proud Alaskan, born in Anchorage in 1941.  His early years were spent in Alaska and the Washington, D.C. area where his Dad worked for the government.  After two years serving as a church missionary in Eastern Canada, he received his Bachelor's and MBA degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles.  Always interested in aviation, John began his career with American Airlines while still in college.  He retired in 2008 after 42 years associated with the airline.

John's quest to research and write about the lives of his parents developed from a wish to share their stories with his children and grandchildren.  Hearts of Courage attempts to capture the strong faith of Joseph and Alta Tippets and bring to life how their prayers were miraculously answered in January and February, 1943.  John and his wife, Bonnie, live in Colleyville, Texas.

The museum will be open for early arrivals.  There is a Hearts of Courage display, and the book is available for purchase in the gift shop.
