Teachers Without Borders – South Africa 2009

Aloha all -

Here is an exciting opportunity for math and science teachers to make a difference.  If you are interested, please contact  Yunus Peer     ypeer@punahou.edu

Deborah Kula

For the 9th consecutive year, TWBSA will work with South African middle school math and science teachers in June/July. In an effort to close the global educational divide, the mission of this volunteer project, founded and led by Yunus Peer (Punahou),  is to share skills and methodology in math and science to help teachers meet and exceed their national curriculum standards. Each SA teacher from a rural school is responsible for 200+ students and the 1534 teachers who voluntarily attended the weeklong workshops in the past eight years, have benefited more than a half million students.

Please read the Hawaii teacher  reflections on the TWBSA website. The experience is life-changing and one which ultimately benefits students here in Hawaii.

We have 2 openings in math for experienced math teachers who are willing to serve and learn, on our 8 member ’09 team. We are a close-knit group – our stay in South Africa is subsidized by the Peer Family network, and our travels and meetings are with local people in rural areas. This year we are scheduled to work with 300 middle school teachers in 2 provinces in 3 weeks. We will also be visiting and teaching with local teachers in rural schools before the workshops begin.

Dates: Leave Hawaii  June 16-18    - return to Hawaii – July 20-22  (5 weeks)

Cost: $5500 – of which $3000 (airfare) is covered by TWBSA family and friends fundraising efforts.

Again, the website reflections will answer many of your questions – If  you need more details and want to be considered for the 09 team, contact Jim Metz (Head: Math team TWBSA)  metz@hawaii.edu   Please include some details about yourself.
