Will you be leading a club, society, voluntary group or in a supervisory position/job during 2008/2009?

What is the FF Bath Leadership Academy? The Academy is a peer support network of exceptional Bath students, all holding leadership roles within a Bath University club, society, volunteer group or in a supervisory position/job during the 2008/2009 academic year. Through their participation, members of the Academy will learn how to be more effective and responsible leaders.

Why is this Academy needed? A better world needs better leaders. We believe that by supporting the leaders of today's university clubs and societies, we are nurturing tomorrow's leaders of society.

Leadership is a developmental activity, which requires reflection, practice and sharing of examples between fellow leaders. Nevertheless, presidents of societies can find themselves leading large numbers of people without previous experience. Elsewhere, student leaders may have plenty of leadership experience but lack the opportunity for a neutral sounding board that can help them develop and grow further.

What are the benefits of being a member of the academy? The Leadership Academy will help you to...

Develop your understanding of the following concepts:

  • Transformational leadership
  • Personal Mastery
  • Conflict and resolution
  • Sustainability

Develop the following skills:

  • Project management
  • Team work
  • Personal Skills Development
  • Fundraising
  • Decision Making and Leadership Styles
  • Life Planning and Management
  • Strategic Planning and Goal Setting

It will also give you the opportunity to develop relationships with the future leaders of society and current business and community leaders.

By developing your knowledge of these concepts, building a leadership support network and a skill base designed for leading in the 21st century you will gain an unrivaled advantage throughout your life. More important than this, you will be placing yourself in a position where you can make a real difference in society.

How much does it cost to join? Academy membership and participating in its activities is free to all Bath students and to those in a supervisory role/job at the University of Bath. However, there are a limited number of places.

Who should apply to join? Exceptional students from any year or subject, including undergraduates and postgraduates studying at the University of Bath, who will have a leadership role during the 2008/2009 academic year, who want to make a difference and who value the importance of developing their leadership potential.

What will be involved?

  • An initial launch day during October 2008 on the University of Bath campus.
  • An intensive weekend away where members of the academy will learn more about themselves and about leadership.
  • A monthly programme when the members of the academy will come together for an hour to discuss the challenges they have had and how they have approached them.
  • At least one joint community project (you will have the opportunity to choose from a number of projects which have been identified or to create your own team project). The project you choose will be a small, typically one day programme which will not require a big time commitment .

During the year, the group will also have the opportunity to get advice and input from leaders of different backgrounds and organisations.

On completion of the year, members of the Academy will become alumni. They will then have the opportunity to mentor future members of the Academy.

How much time will it will take? Bearing in mind all members of the Aademy will be leaders of other organisations, the time commitment will be limited to initial launch events (one day and one weekend), a one hour meeting per month, 2 to 3 mentor sessions which will depend on you to arrange and manage based upon your own timetable, a development weekend (funding depending), a social or two, the joint community project (one to two days depending on the project you choose to get involved in) and a finale evening...

Is this Academy a new initiative? Yes, this will be the launch of the first Leadership Academy of its kind, both at the University of Bath and in the UK. By joining this year, you will have the chance to shape the Aademy at Bath and the direction it takes. What is even more exciting is that this Academy will act as a hub of best practice, ahead of further academies being launched by Future Foundations at other UK Universities.

How do I find out more? There will be a drop in session on Thursday 29th May from 12pm to 2pm in Wessex House, WH3.36 . This will be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have. If you miss this session you can email any questions you might have to jon@future-foundations.co.uk

How do I apply to be a founding member of the Academy? Simply click on the register button at the top of this page, and then complete the self-nomination form (you will have 30 minutes to do this).

If you think you need longer than 30 minutes to complete the form we advise you to copy the questions into a Word processing document, and then copy and paste your answers into the application form. We do not however expect that you will need longer than 30 minutes to complete the form.

Please try to keep your answers to fewer than 100 words per question.
