Tamarind Festival of Caribbean Literature in Washington, DC

Welcome to the fourth annual celebration of Caribbean literature in America’s capital - The Tamarind Festival of Caribbean Literature in Washington DC. In the year the United States has been culturally and politically transformed and a black man, Barack Obama becomes president of what most consider the most powerful country in the world, Tamarind Fest focuses on themes of strength, survival and transformation. What does it take to weather the storm, thrive and evolve as agents of change? And what is the role of the Caribbean author in this transformation. It takes the DNA of hundreds of Caribbean Diaspora writers, among them Paule Marshall, Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley, Stokely Carmichael, Michael Thelwell, Lynton Kwesi Johnson, Maya Angelou, Ms Louise Bennett Coverly, Maya Angelou, Mikey Smith, Mutabaruka, Aime Cesaire, Derek Walcott, Lorna Goodison, Rosa Guy, Ian Smart, Malcolm Gladwell and Franz Fanon to help nurture and grow men and women to become leaders. These are among the many significant catalysts in the quest for transformation. They are soldiers of creativity. Perhaps they are like the proverbial Tamarind tree surviving pilgrimages and strong winds, growing in sandy or rich soil. Their words are the sweet and grimace of the tamarind fruit, bringing love and purifying fire. These writers have had a profound impact on the weft and warp of the American fabric.
