California Youth in Theatre Day
March 24, 2009, from 7:30 AM-4:30 PM
California Youth in Theatre (CYIT) Day is an annual celebration of educational theatre at the California State Capitol. Award-winning students of all ages gather from around the state to perform, take workshops and meet legislators. CYIT's purpose is to honor the achievement of arts students while re-emphasizing the vital role theatre plays as a core subject in the educational development of each student in California.
2009 marks the 11th Anniversary of California Youth in Theatre Day. CYIT was founded by Gai Jones as a project of the California Educational Theatre Association (CETA).
Click here to find more information on CETA.
Who is eligible to participate in CYIT:
This event honors selected prize-winning student performers, their parents, administrators, theatre educators/sponsors, legislators, elected officials and guests. Any student or group of students who ranked or placed in any state theatre festival or event is eligible. The school must be a member of CETA. If your school is not currently a member, we invite you to add membership to your registration.
If your student/s has qualified to participate (with your sponsorship) in the CA Educational Theatre Association’s CA YOUTH IN THEATRE DAY, in Sacramento, on March 24, 2009, from 7:30 AM-4:30 PM, complete the registration for this event by selecting the number of tickets/participants above, and then completing the online form.
Theatre education groups involved in this celebration may include but are not limited to: Camp Bravo, Drama Teachers’ Association of SO CA, Trinity College-American examinations, ComedySportz-LA, CA State Thespians, Kennedy Center-American College Theatre Festival-Region VIII, Fullerton College, CETA-South and North regional festivals, MACY, and recommended elementary and middle schools.
THERE ARE NO UNSPONSORED STUDENTS OR OVER NIGHT STAYS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS EVENT. All correspondence will be sent to the CETA member (teacher). It is the teacher’s responsibility to distribute all info to registered delegates. We recommend that teachers attend and supervise their students, since it is an educational day celebrating teachers and students.
CETA ACCEPTS NO LIABILITY FOR ANY INJURY CONNECTED WITH THIS EVENT.
How the day works :
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
The day’s events begin at the California State Capitol, at 8 AM with a continental breakfast for all who have purchased the $25.00 registration fee (per person). This fee also includes a box lunch, souvenir program, certificates, recognition, guest speakers, workshops and hours of prize-winning performances.
The Opening Ceremony begins at 8 AM in the California State Capitol building. Arrive at 7:30 AM for entrance into the California State Capitol building. Only those delegates who have paid the preregistered $25.00 on or before Feb 23, 2009, will be seated for the opening festivities. There is no on-site registration.
At 8:40 AM, each delegate will walk to the Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) at 1419 H Street (916) 446-7501 for hour-by-hour performances to which all legislators are invited. CETA certificates will be presented during the day to the performing delegates.
Each performer is to bring small hand props or costumes as needed. Bring your own CD player for any musical accompaniment. No piano will be available. STC will provide 4 chairs ONLY.
All monologues and solo performances be a maximum of 3 minutes; duo performances a maximum of 5 minutes; group performances a maximum of 8 minutes. No school may have combined performances of more than 10 minutes. You may have to cut songs and scenes to fit the time limits. If you go overtime, it will affect the day’s events. Please be professional and perform within the time limits. It is recommended that you get performance rights for your published material for a festival performance.
ALL MATERIAL MUST BE G-RATED. We have students as young as 10 years old (and their grandmothers!) in the audience. You may not say any of the following words in your performances: "god***n," "sh*t," "f*ck," "bitch" or similar words.
There will be workshops for the delegates. All morning performing students are to be audience members for the morning performers; the afternoon performers and their instructors are audience members for the afternoon performers. When the delegates and educators are not audience members, they are to attend the interactive workshops we provide.
At lunch everyone gathers on the patio for the box lunches, during which time performances will continue, so all delegates remain at STC during the lunch time.
At approximately 3:30 PM, everyone will gather for our Closing Ceremonies which conclude the day’s events. After 4 PM, some delegates may take the self-guided tour of the Capitoll or take the trolley to Old Sacramento for shopping and food. Schedule air transportation after 6PM. Do not make any travel arrangements to leave STC earlier than 4:30 PM
After the day’s events, all students return to their homes, so that no school is missed on March 25, 2009.
How to arrange your travel:
IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS SO THAT ALL PERFORMING STUDENTS AND REGISTERED DELEGATES ARRIVE AT THE CAPITAL NO LATER THAN 7:55 AM. Do not schedule leaving the day’s events until after 4:30 PM. Make your travel arrangements early; it takes approximately 40 minutes to travel from Sacramento Airport to the capitol. Be sure to make prior reservations for ground transportation to and from the airport.
