A SC Gathering: Bootstrapping an Agile Team

If you want to attend but weren't fast enough on the draw to get a ticket, contact Amanda Abelove. People are being pretty good about letting us know if they RSVP'd but can't make it... LA attendance rates being what they are... And we're not as sexy as Social Media Club... We might be able to recycle some tickets.

If we can't recycle enough tickets to get you in for this event, we will put you on the invite list for first seating at our next audience-friendly event. No sneaky releases to our buddies before you or secret discounts on tickets. Click here to get on the list.

That said Scrum Club is an "underground" user group. Most of our activities are mentor-focused and team-based... and we are having a lot of success with that. Right now we are trying to get a hands-on experience lab piloted at a local university that puts professionals, students, and professors in the same room to learn Scrum on real projects. We'd also like to get a few spots in expensive CSM classes sponsored for our volunteers (in return for hawking them and getting people in seats, of course). We are entirely dedicated to using the dark arts of marketing, sales and PR to benefit working professionals and the community. Learn more here and contact us.

Please join LA Scrum Club and Rally Software for a special evening on Monday, February 9th with local Agile luminaries: Christophe Louvion, CTO of Gorilla Nation, Scott Downey, ScrumMaster at MySpace, and George Schlitz, Principal Coach at Big Visible Solutions.  Admission is free of charge and wine, beer and appetizers will be provided.

At this unique event, you will hear from Agile experts as they discuss the benefits of moving from a waterfall or plan-driven process to Agile. You will learn how the Agile process can help you achieve faster time to market, increased productivity and higher quality. With an Agile implementation, you can also experience more effective collaboration and better cultural alignment between your IT team, the business and its customers.

This event will focus on:

  • Starting an Agile software team
  • Measuring your progress and success
  • What makes some Agile teams more successful than others
  • The organizational barriers and opportunities to Agile adoption that you should know about
  • Cultivating our Agile community for knowledge sharing and interaction

Admission is FREE but you must RSVP since space is limited.

Christophe Louvion, CTO of Gorilla Nation in Los Angeles

Christophe has over 10 years of experience in enabling rapid business growth through planning and implementation of cutting edge technologies. He held various positions at Shopzilla.com, where he was instrumental in developing the leading shopping search engine, serving there as Software Architect, VP of Operations, VP of Product Development and Engineering, Agile Evangelist/Coach and Uber Scrum Master. Prior to working in the e-commerce field, he worked as a Software Engineer at the U.S. Attorney's Office of San Diego. He started his career as a Software Engineer for Cegelec in Paris, where he won an Anvar award from The French Agency for Innovation. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from University of Nancy I and a Master of Science in Computer Science from ESIAL, both in France. He is a Certified Scrum Practitioner, and a member of the Agile Alliance and the Agile Project Leadership Network.

Scott Downey, ScrumMaster and Technical Project Manager at Myspace.com in Beverly Hills

Scott has been active in the Software Industry for more than 18 years.  He has held positions at nearly every level of successful organizations, from Software Engineering Manager for the Core Anti-Virus Engine Team at Symantec to Vice President of Engineering and Chief Architect of Vogo Networks/eGlobe Telecommunications.   He has focused the last half of his career on organizational process optimization and has worked with a variety of methodologies, including formal waterfall, plan-driven development, TDD, RUP, XP and, of course, Scrum.  In his current role as the Agile Coach for MySpace.com, he is headquartered in Beverly Hills but has multi-site responsibilities throughout the organization.  He is a Certified Scrum Practitioner, a member of both the Scrum Alliance and the Agile Alliance, and works with Dr. Jeff Sutherland each quarter to arrange and conduct Scrum Master Certification courses in Beverly Hills.

George Schlitz, Principal Coach at BigVisible Solutions in Irvine

George Schlitz is a Principal Agile Coach and co-founder of BigVisible Solutions.  He has focused on coaching Agile development teams and executives in the adoption of Agile product development, methodology/process improvement, and leadership of complex programs.   George has been using and championing Agile practices on projects since 2000.  He has had extensive experience consulting in large organizations (10,000+ employees) – particularly within financial services and manufacturing industries (with recent clients including Fidelity Investments, Barclay’s Global Investors and Textron) – and most enjoys work in challenging organizational cultures.

Audience moderator: Tony Wong, President of Digital Onion Inc. in Marina Del Rey
