Yale NorCal AAAYA Day of Service at Angel Island

Come and join AAAYA's Northern California chapter as we participate in the Yale Day of Service at the Angel Island Immigration StationLocated in the middle of San Francisco Bay and regarded as the "Ellis Island of the West," Angel Island Immigration Station was routinely the first stop for immigrants crossing the Pacific Ocean between 1910 and 1940. It is an important part of California and Asian American history, with incomparable vistas of the Bay.

Volunteers should meet at the Tiburon ferry dock on Main Street at 9:45 a.m. sharp for the 10:00 a.m. ferry departure. They will take the short ride to Ayala Cove, and then walk to the historic immigration station, about a 20 minute walk. Visit www.angelislandferry.com and click on Directions for driving and parking instructions.
Once we get to the island, we'll take a tour of the barracks (visit www.aiisf.org for all the history of this site, through which thousands of Asian and other immigrants came to this country) and then get to work!  We will focus on landscape beautification (a.k.a. weeding, cleaning of the site and the stairs to the barracks, etc.). We will also be setting up the site for a poetry reading the next day, part of the programs of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation.
Participation is limited to 30 peopleWe welcome children ages 10+ who are highly motivated to help with the work project. We plan to depart the island on the 3:20 p.m. ferry, although people can stay as late as the last 5:20 p.m. ferry.
Please be prepared for all kinds of weather - even if it is sunny where you are, it is often foggy, cold and/or windy on the island. On the other hand, it can be warm and sunny, so bring sunscreen and a hat. Also wear work clothes, and gloves, and bring small gardening tools if you have them. If it rains, it may be harder to do the outdoors work but there will still be some indoor tasks. We will provide more details to the 30 who sign up.
FEES: $9.00 per person, includes a picnic lunch and complimentary round-trip ferry fare from Tiburon (normally $13.50).

We look forward to seeing you there!  Please sign up early as space is limited, and please help spread the word and bring your friends.
