A Different Lens: Perception is Reality 

For many African Americans the thought of seeking behavioral/mental health services can be frightening, met with apprehension or even the last resort.  If they do seek help it is critical that service providers be equipped to respond to the differences in beliefs, attitudes and expectations about mental health services.  A Different Lens seminar will help counselors, therapists and other mental health service providers understand the this unique set of values and beliefs regarding mental health services. 

Seminar Objectives:  
  • Uncover and dispel the myths about African-American clients
  • Learn what most African Americans think about the behavioral/mental health profession and its services
  • Identify the micro-aggressions in clinical practice and how to avoid them
  • Understand the basic principles of African Centered Psychology and how to apply them
  • Gain a practical framework to earn cultural credibility as a mental health provider
