2009 ALF Senior Fellows' Retreat

NOTE: To avoid paying convenience fees for using this system and/or paying with a credit card for the retreat registration fees, do NOT use the Eventbrite reservation system, but send an email to scot@alf-mvc.org, then mail a check for $239 to the ALF office, 1321 Garden Highway, Sac, 95833.

Join us for twenty-four hours of fun with your ALF family at the 2009 Sr. Fellows' Retreat, sponsored by PG&E and Western Health Advantage, and learn about ways people and organizations are trying to improve our state and Greater Sacramento region, then stimulate and re-frame your thinking about how to make change happen where it's really needed.  Plus spend time reuniting with your class and expand your network by meeting other ALFers in other classes!

All Sr. Fellows, Boardmembers and Class XIII Fellows are invited to attend.  Spouses/partners may stay with you at the hotel, but all events are for ALF members only to maximize conversation and dialogue among members.

Sunday's keynote speakers are Jim Mayer, Executive Director of California Forward, and Chris Benner, author of This Could Be the Start of Something Big.  Monday features our own Bill Kennedy as he takes a look at the role social cognition takes in our thinking about our communities.

James MayerThe Pew Center on the States, which looks at how well legislative, executive and senior civil service managers lead and operate each state, gives California an overall grade of “C.” Forty one states got higher grades, six scored the same, and only two scored lower. Looking solely at fiscal performance, California earned a “D+.”

Jim Mayer is executive director of California Forward, a bipartisan group of citizens from every walk of life who have come together to reclaim our power and make our government work again. Their goal is fundamental change: government that's small enough to listen, big enough to tackle real problems, smart enough to spend our money wisely in good times and bad, and honest enough to be held accountable for results.  A lot of California Forward's plan sounds like plain old common sense, but the reality is that states that have embraced these policies are seeing better results, and not just in the form of on‐time, gimmick‐free budgets. These states are achieving better reading and math scores for schoolchildren, better roads and highways, and more children with healthcare.  Here from Jim how, across the board, states that have adopted the best practices proposed by California Forward are getting more done where it matters most – in classrooms, on highways, and in hospitals and clinics.

Chris BennerChris Benner is an Associate Professor of Community and Regional Development, and Chair of the Community Development Graduate Group at the University of California, Davis.  Professor Benner’s recent book is This Could Be The Start of Something Big: Social Movements for Regional Equity and the Future of Metropolitan America, which examines new regional movements around community development, policy initiatives, and social movement organizing, and their potential for promoting greater economic opportunity for disadvantaged residents in metropolitan areas. Benner’s research focuses on the relationships between technological change, regional development, the structure of economic opportunity, and strategies for promoting regional equity. He's currently finishing another project, "Just Growth:  Linking Regional Equity and Regional Economic Development," and will have information to share about his research.

Bill KennedyBill Kennedy, Managing Attorney of Legal Services of Northern California and a member of ALFMV Class IX, will demonstrate how our own brain perceives, categorizes, stores, and recalls information.  "Innattentional blindness" happens when our attention is so fixed on something that we fail to notice whatever else is going on right in front of us. The bottom line is that we see what we believe rather than vice versa. Discover how these structures are created and how they can be changed. Bill will help us look differently at our region and see what opportunities await our newly focused attention. Participate in this mind-bending workshop and you might not see things in quite the same way again!

Join us for the annual event with the largest collection of ALF Senior Fellows outside the Exemplary Leader Award Dinner!
