Calder Classic Funspiel - General Rules and Guidelines Curling has always been known for the prevalence of good sportsmanship among its members as well as the friendly courteous rivalry that exists on the ice. While most of the courtesies suggested below will not be found in rulebooks, all curlers who understand the true spirit and traditions of the game practice them.

1. Curlers must wear proper footwear while on the ice. That is, regulation curling or running shoes (running shoes that are clean and have not been worn outside are acceptable, remember that you want shoes that will provide you with some traction on the ice) must be worn. Regular footwear worn on the street will not be acceptable, even if a slider is worn. Before entering the ice area you must change into clean proper footwear.

2. Upon entering the Curling Club, please use the shoe washer to clean any debris off your shoes (this is the shoes you were wearing outside). Then before entering the ice area, use the shoe washer (this time to clean your inside only shoes) to again clean your shoes. Dirt tracked onto the ice by players impedes the running of the rocks.

3. Curling rocks are never lifted from the ice surface. They are slid from location to location.

4. Curling brooms are for sweeping only. Tapping brooms on the ice surface leaves debris on the ice and impedes the running of the rocks.

5. Keep hands, knees and other body parts off the ice. Keeping these body parts on the ice will melt small depressions and negatively impede the movement of rocks.

6. Protect the hacks from rocks hitting them. An inch of ice is the only thing holding the hacks in place. (For those non-curlers the hack is similar to a starting block in track and field, the foothold device where the person who throws the rock pushes off for delivery.)

7. The Avonair Curling Club is a non-smoking environment.

8. No beverages are allowed on the ice.

9. Please stay on the walkways in the ice arena.
